Beyond the glass mountain
Together with Céline Struger in cooperation with [kunstwerk] krastal, we explored the surroundings of the Lauster marble quarry in Austria. Here we developed site-specific installations and interventions. With our interest in geological and paleontological aspects, we developed poetic narratives that expand the boundaries of reality. We were interested in the idea of “occupying” the monumental quarry and “conquering” it, at least temporarily.
Elements of the temporary, site-specific installation in the quarry were adapted and translated for the spaces in the [kunstwerk] krastal sculptor's house. Here we worked with the collection and stories of the Carinthian geologist and palaeontologist Georg Kandutsch. Traces of this exploration were found in a performative slide show and a leaflet called “Abenteuer Bergkristall”. Here, in an interview between the two artists, you can read the explosive story about the recovery of a 400 kg crystal in Carinthia in the early 2000s. This story was supported by the slide show, which alternated between documentary photos of the installation in the quarry and expedition photos in the Carinthian mountains.
The title “beyond the glass mountain” refers to the motif of the glass mountain, which is mainly found in the genre of fairy tales. It is based on the idea of a transparent but insurmountably smooth mountain, which is thus called a glass mountain.
