I have declared my first year of the “das fliegende Künstlerzimmer” program at Lüdertalschule to be the year of the potato. The potato, you could say, opens up a wide field: it is food and a commodity that is grown in the neighborhood. But it is also a more or less affectionate term for Germans without an obvious migration background. By choosing the potato, I am opening up a wide range of different schools of thought and possibilities for action. It's about the potato as a nourishing food - among other things, we organized a parade demanding “French fries for everyone!” and prepared potato snacks together for the harvest festival. The potato was also a motif for sculptures and items of clothing and was also used as a printing tool. It was also the stimulus for an examination of the concept of home.
What is home and how many can you have? The potato was a particularly good example to highlight the contradictions of this construct.
